PERSONALITY:
Most people's first impression of Lightning is that she is a very angry woman. This is certainly true, but anger is not the heart of her inner turmoil. That would be guilt.

The critical event in Lightning's development, much like with Snow, is when her sister Serah became a crystal. Shortly before, she had expressed harsh disapproval of Serah's relationship with Snow, and refused to believe them when they claimed Serah had become a Pulse l'Cie. By the time she realized that it was true, Serah had already been captured by the fal'Cie. This is what ultimately led to her crystal transformation, and is - in her mind - Lightning's greatest failure. She didn't trust her own sister, and so she was taken away from her.

However, Lightning is bad at handling guilt. This is an extension of the more broad fact that she is terrible at admitting fault in herself. This likely is rooted in the fact that her parents died when she was still young, leaving her as the head of her household and in charge of taking care of her younger sister. She had to be strong, and accordingly refuses to admit weakness, an attitude only hardened by her time spent in the Guardian Corps. So, if she can't handle guilt, what does she do? Transform it into anger.

Lightning's favorite passtime is assigning blame. She reacts to sadness and guilt by lashing out at the world. When Serah is captured, she becomes a terrorist to exact her vengeance on PSICOM. When Serah becomes a crystal, she beats the shit out of Snow to try and convince herself that it's all his fault. When she becomes a l'Cie, she sets out to destroy Sanctum's fal'Cie without stopping to think about it. All of these are easier to her than accepting the fact that she might be at fault, or - possibly even worse - that not all of life's problems can be assigned to scapegoats.

Even as she starts to grow out of this, Lightning's psychological problems don't go away. She learns to reach out to others for help, but comes off as arrogant when she still refuses to admit her flaws. Her independent nature has led her to be a bit of a control freak - she has to take charge of the situation to be at anything resembling peace. She orders Hope around constantly, and even takes the steering wheel out of Sazh's hands while he's trying to fly them to safety.

Even more fundamentally than blaming others, Lightning's chief motivation is distracting herself from her own problems. She's extremely driven, going so far as to say that "as long as you have a goal, you can survive" and charging forward without stopping to see if her friends plan to follow her. She's endlessly trying to outrun herself, afraid that if she falters then she'll be crushed by the weight of her own guilt.

ABILITIES:
Lightning is a l'Cie, which gives her abilities exceeding that of an ordinary human. She can jump higher, hit harder, and take more punishment than she could before. Also, she has access to the following magic abilities:
Libra: Reveals to her the target's strengths and weaknesses.
Ruin: Fires a bolt of non-elemental destructive energy.
Thunder: Calls down a small bolt of lightning to shock the target.
Water: Strikes the enemy with a small but potent orb of water.
Fire: Fires a small orb of flames at the target.
Sparkstrike: Imbues her weapon with electricity for a single attack.
Aquastrike: Imbues her weapon with water for a single attack.
Cure: Heals minor injuries on the target; can be used repeatedly for increased effect, but not useful for serious wounds.
Esuna: Purges poison or other such afflictions from the target.

Lightning also has the ability to summon the Ediolon Odin, a magical entity about twice her size, which fights alongside her with a huge sword and lightning attacks. It can transform into a flying horse, which Lightning rides.

Lightning wields a gunblade, and is highly proficient in its use.

POSSESSIONS:
Gunblade (Blazefire Saber), Accessory (Silver Bangle), a handful of Potions, a Phoenix Down, and assorted junk items.
